Whoever thought genealogy could be so much fun!! Don’t get me wrong ... I’ve hit a few “brick walls”along the way like every other researcher, and I'm sure I'll hit more, but generally there’s always another way around. My father-in-law put the bug into me about 5 years ago. He, along with one of his many brothers, have been researching their family history for over 15 years. Being from the older generation and not hip with computers or the internet he came to me for help in searching some of the online databases. One thing always leads to another and before long I started researching my family history.

Now, five years later and $2500 poorer, none of which I must mention, was spent on professional researchers, I’ve collected a database of over 1000 individuals with some help from family members. Obviously not all are on my direct family line but nonetheless it makes for one hell of an impressive wall chart!!

The collection of supporting documents as we all know is the single most important item in establishing lineage. Obtaining certified copies of certificates has always been troublesome and now, since 9/11 and recent world events, uncertified copies have become “hard to get”. Many local state archives have changed their policies quoting identity theft as the reason. As well, at the time of this writing, NARA reported that “due to the lack of federal funding”, $22 million to be exact, they will need to reduce their hours of operation. For all researchers this translates into “nights & weekends”. This will have an enormous impact on us part-time researchers.

Notwithstanding the above don’t let this deter you eager genealogists out there. Regardless of current restrictions researching your family history can be a great reward. Knowing where your family came from, discovering their heritage and practices, what they did and how they got to where you are today should instill in you satisfaction and pride regardless of past or present family situations.
